Blizzard Currency Gate: Repeating History

Listen to Episode 66 of the Horde for Life podcast for more audio discussion on the following topic.

Break Out Your Spreadsheets… again

Generally speaking, I feel confident in saying that Blizzard has done an admirable job of admitting, learning from and not repeating previous mistakes. However one area where the fine folks in Irvine have failed in this regard is the repeated use of multiple and varied forms of in game currency.

Recently it was announced that Blizzard will be adding yet another “currency” to The World of Warcraft as part of the 5.2 patch. Following up on the expansion released series of Elder Charms, The Thunder Isle patch will now add Mogu Charms of Fate. For those not in the know, after patch 5.2 Elder Charms will be usable as a new currency for Mogushan Vaults, Terrace of Endless Spring and the Heart of Fear. The new Mogu Charms of Fate will act as a bonus currency to rolls on boss drops… and just when we started to put our spreadsheets away. These in game legal tender, like so many introduced before it serves one and only one primary purpose, to gate gear acquisition and thus game progression.

The “Gating” Game

While it is perfectly understandable that Blizzard wants (and needs) to gate players from the most currently released content and gear in an effort to extend game play life, using multiple currencies to do so is a myopic – and quite bluntly – lazy mechanism in which to do so.

Yes it is easy.
Yes it is low effort.
Yes it will create the desired barrier to progression.

However it does so as a short term fix that while masking the symptoms temporarily, really offers no cure. Adding multiple currencies that are specific to a game that is already so heavy based on tiers will only serve to make that very content less accessible once the next content release is launched. This in effect builds walls of linear game play that discourage a more dynamic play style and that, in the long term, is bad for retention and bad for business.

Not All Tiered Currencies are Created Equal

If you have not guessed this by now, let me go ahead and state for the record that I am, across the board, against anything other than a single currency system in game. This includes the currency wall that exists between PvE and PvP.  However I do understand even in disagreement why those currencies (Valor vs Conquest for example) exist and Blizzard has at least attempted to soften the wall with the ability to exchange the two for a premium.

However there is a chasm of difference between separating PvE and PvP versus creating multiple and often confusing levels and facets of currency with a finite lifespan within PvE depending upon the tier in which you are currently gaming. As a player you should be able to do those things in game that you find enjoyable and not be forced into a bottleneck of game play like a heard of cattle/tauren all for the sake of slowing down progression.

Let me be clear, no you should not be able to get 5.2 gear by picking peace bloom in Durotar and yes the fastest way to acquire said 5.2 gear should be to do the relevant content released without the ability to horde currency (i.e. elder charms) in the pre-launch period. However creating a new never before seen set of currency – once again – specifically for new content is not the answer and is shortsighted.

History Speaks Volumes

To bolster the single currency argument from the level of strictly rant to something more along the lines of an educated opinion, let us turn to history. Since the dawn of Azeroth there are several examples of multiple exchange currencies being used, again strictly for gating purposes with results ranging from flawed and frustrating to completely illogical and unused.

As an example of the former we need to look no further than the last major implementation of tiered currencies in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. I of course am speaking of the the lost tokens of (insert your favorite cool sounding adjective here). While you could argue that this implementation was an improvement from the many types of confusing badges used in The Burning Legion, most would agree that going from horrendous to bad is not much of an improvement.

To speak to the latter how about we stroll down memory lane to the many various PvP tokens that were ZONE SPECIFIC (Zangramarsh Tower PvP anyone?) to my all time favorite; Battleground specific honor marks! That’s right kids, back in the day PvP gear and mounts required a set number of Warsong Gultch marks coupled with Arathi Basin marks and a sprinkling of Alterac Valley marks.

Oh the memories have scarred me like that of an abused gamer. Indeed history tells us this is a bad idea that has never worked in game, yet down the path we stride again.

Follow the Rules!

In short… a cardinal rule for the introduction of any new currency into the game should be that it NEVER becomes obsolete. Yet so many have. Devalued? Perhaps, but never obsolete. This can be mitigated to some degree with an exchange similar to the Honor for Conquest and Justice for Valor mechanisms. It is not ideal, but it is tenable.

Forgetting for the moment how crazy the world outside of gaming would be if we had to pay for our goods and services with 8 different currencies, of which many were not transferable, Blizzard needs to take a more proactive approach to restricting the progression flow. This could be done by introducing and implementing a new gating system that does not revolve around new and multiple currencies that will be forgotten to time and history.

We have caps on valor points that already serve as a restriction, so why have the charms in the first place? If the answer is because you want people doing specific content for specific gear (which is flawed but that is another discussion for another day) then make the gear non purchasable with Valor until you unlock the areas by completing it in stages.

Calling Warren Buffet!

If you step away for a moment and really think about this, using multiple currencies is actually absurd to the big picture. Multiple tiers of Marks, Tokens, Badges, Points, Charms, Shards have all been introduced to the game and many have been stricken from the Database for their failure, let us learn from that.

Blizzard is an amazing company with exceptional talent and in most facets great vision. However when it comes to in game monetary and financial systems, Blizzard will not be confused with Charles Schwab or Ben Bernanke anytime soon.

Cross Realm Zones – Insult to Injury

Intent versus Application

Reaching into the universal bag of cliches, I find myself repeating the phrases “Best Intentions” and “Looked good on paper” over and over again each time I see any other player in game with a character name ending in the asterisk that signifies a tourist from another server. Anyone that has listened to the last few episodes of the Horde for Life podcast knows my disdain for a technology that was created – at least in part – to avoid the PR nightmare of merging servers. However it is important to note here that I am not opposed to the technology, I am opposed to its implementation. An implementation which in this authors opinion is quite possibly the most misguided application of a technology since in game voice appeared in game.

I should also preface the remainder of this article by stating for the record that I call a higher population server home. A server with a strong economy and that can certainly bias one’s opinion. That said, the CRZ technology in and of itself has potential in targeted/instanced areas such as realID zone invites and in more global facets much the same way LFR, BG battle groups and looking for dungeon has opened the game up to the majority of players. So despite its awful current form, I have hope that the functionality will someday lead to an overall improvement of the game as it assists with downstream and future mechanics to leverage the games population across all servers to enhance the game as a whole.

However this article will focus on the here and now and the problems that the current CRZ application creates.

That’s a Big Mammoth!

To talk about cross realm zones, we must first address the War Mammoth in the room, low population servers. I recently rolled a “test” character on one of the lowest population servers in North America and can confirm that the single biggest issue for those worlds revolves around the economy. If CRZ was designed to help low population servers then you have to ask why Blizzard created a technology that does absolutely nothing to help or even impact what is the single biggest issue on those servers.

To make matters worse, CRZ seems to be applied in the most arbitrary and uneducated of ways. I took my low population test character to the fine city of Stormwind, placed him the heart of the bank/AH area and noted in the span of 60 minutes that I saw ONE other character and a grand total of 4 messages in trade chat. Compare that to your server and you may well see another large problem facing the dead servers.

Again I must ask, why would a technology designed to help lower population servers not be applied to their capital cities? Forgetting for the moment that there is no way CRZ can assist those economies with Auction House impacts, at least seeing more than one person in the entire city would make the server “feel” more active. So we have established that CRZ does not impact the economy in any way and we have confirmed that CRZ does not place any foreign players in the capital cities of low population servers. So where does CRZ become active? Why in the starter areas of course! Wait… what? why?

That is right, for some unknown reason the technology will not fill the ghost towns of Orgrimmar or Stormwind, but roll a new toon in Deathknell, Gilneas or any of the other starter zones and you will find yourself in a sea of asterisks, mob tagging and character clipping to make you think the game just launched. Is this what Blizzard thinks makes a server feel active? Fighting for mobs as a level 1 in an area that was DESIGNED to be a solo experience?

Couple this with the well known and documented crowded farming zones (arguably one of the few former good aspects of a low population server) and you can plainly see how CRZ not only fails to address the issues facing dead servers but it actually takes away any benefit to playing on those realms.

Lets recap:

1. CRZ does not help the economy/AH on any server
2. CRZ does not populate dead capital cities
3. CRZ overcrowds starter areas
4. CRZ floods farming zones with players who take those mats back to their server not the dead server economy.
5. CRZ floods quest zones at a time when Blizzard has removed most group quests.

Can someone tell me the benefits of such an implementation again?

Just Transfer Already

It should be noted here that Blizzard has already developed and implemented technology that mitigates 90% of what would be real problems on low population servers when they created the battle group and cross server functionality we use everyday to queue for dungeons, raids and PvP. The real problem here is that CRZ should be used to assist or at least give the impression/feeling that you are not alone at times when it is most obvious and depressing, for example when you are the only one standing in an entire capital city… NOT when you are happily farming your favorite herb or ore zone or enjoying the starter quest story lines. CRZ is poorly implemented and helps next to no one, regardless of server. The ability to invite your friends to share your server is the only redeeming and quite excellent aspect of cross realm zone technology. Lets leave that in place and turn the rest of CRZ off.

In its place, Blizzard should bite the bullet and offer free transfers to low population servers. Too many people are stuck with not one but 5, 10 or more characters making $25 per character transfers cost prohibitive and incredibly unfair. The net result of this effective change would be an ever so slight drop in transfer revenue, potentially offset by the goodwill and subscription retention that cannot be logged on a balance sheet.

In closing, Blizzard… if you are nervous about closing servers, don’t fret… you can always take those dead servers, after free transfers, and turn them into classic “vanilla” rule set or old school world PvP (aka no guards with nets) servers!
